- Boy Tied By Dog Collar - Court Story
Warrants for the arrest of a couple accused of wilfully neglecting and ill-treating a girl and boy were issued at Tunstall, Staffs, yesterday [17 Sep 1951], when they failed to reappear in court after an adjournment. John Wilfred Cumberbatch (38) and his 19-year-old wife Joan pleaded not guilty to wilfully neglecting and ill-treating Jacqueline Emily Cumberbatch (7) and Tony Frederick Fox (4) in a manner likely to cause unnecessary suffering and injury to health. Mr E.D. Dennis, prosecuting, said that from a ladder placed against the children's bedroom police saw the boy fastened with a rope and dog collar round his left wrist attached to a metal bracket or staple in the floor. His ankles were tied with packing cord. His step-sister, Jacqueline, was with him, but was too afraid to open the door. Officers entered the house and found the door fastened on the outside with a hook and staple. Mr. Dennis said Cumberbatch had made appalling allegations about Jacqueline. For some time Cumberbatch had hated the sight of her. Dr. George Bates, who examined the boy six hours after he had been found on August 10, said he weighed 29 1/2 lb. in his vest. A boy of his age should have weighed about 40 lb. Given sweets and biscuits he had gobbled them up with an almost animal ferocity. Cumberbatch and his wife were arrested at their home last night.

Couple Jailed: Boy Kept on Dog Collar
A couple were sent to prison for six months at Hanley. Staffs, yesterday [25 Sep 1951], for neglecting and illtreating a seven-year-old girl and four-year-old boy. The couple were John Wilfred Cumberbatch (38) and his wife Joan (29), of Liverpool Road, Kidsgrove, Staffs, and the children, Jacqueline (7), Cumberbatch's child by a previous wife, and Tony Frederick Fox (4), one of three children born to Mrs Cumberbatch before her marriage to Cumberbatch. The prosecution told how the children were found in a bedroom locked on the outside. Jacqueline was crying and Tony, skimpily dressed, had his left wrist secured by a dog collar stapled to the floor and his ankles tied with cord.
