- SUMMONS COURT.
(Before Mr. F. Acton and Mr. G. Goodall.)
Defendant's Fortunate Escape.- "If it were not for the kindness of your relatives, you would have to suffer a very heavy penalty, and there is no doubt that you richly deserve it," said the Chairman to a woman who was charged with having neglected her children for some time past. The defendant Mary Harvey, who lives at 21, Queen's-grove, and the case was one of the most repulsive imaginable. Mr. C.E.W. Lucas, who prosecuted on behalf of the N.S.P.C.C., said that the woman had been frequently warned for neglecting her family, but she had taken no notice. The home was in a shocking state of filth. There was only one bed for all the six little ones, the bedding was totally inadequate and dirty in the extreme. The case was proved by Inspector Allen, N.S.P.C.C., who said that after the summons had been taken out, the woman's relatives stepped in, and remedied the state of the home. The children were now well looked after, and upon the application of Mr. Lucas the Bench allowed the csse to stand over until March 26th, for it to be ascertained.

CHILD NEGLECT
NOTTINGHAM WOMAN SENT TO PRISON
A month ago Mary Harvey, of 21, Queen's-grove, was summoned for neglecting her six children, and the evidence given by Inspector Allen, N.S.P.C.C. at that time showed that the case was an extremely repulsive one. Some of the defendant's relatives, however, brought about an improvement, and the case was remanded for a month, defendant promising to take our summonses against the father of the children. At the Guildhall to-day defendant was again brought before the magistrates, Mr. C.E.W. Lucas, on behalf of the N.S.P.C.C., stating that she had absolutely refused to do anything of the sort. He now left the magistrates to deal with the case.
Mr. Acton asked why she had not taken out a summons against the man?
Defendant said the man had sent her money. He told her not to take out summonses because it would not make things any better.
Mr. Acton: That is to save his own skin.
Mr. Acton said he remembered that it was one of the worst cases of neglect of children they ever have had before them, and defendant seemed to have ignored the advice of excellent relatives. She had refused to carry out the promises she made. The best thing would be for her to go to prison, and the children would be looked after in her absence.
Defendant appealed to the Bench not be send her to prison.
Mr. Acton said she was liable to be sent to prison for six months, and they were not sure that she did not deserve the full penalty.
She was sent to prison for three months, and arrangements were made for the care of the children.
