"Another old identity of Otago, Mrs. Jane BARNETT, passed away in Dunedin on Sunday. Mrs. BARNETT belonged to a family with a military record, being the daughter of Sergeant-major Alexander BREBNER, who was wounded in the battle of Waterloo. She has six grandsons at present serving at the front, one of whom, (Private R.R. SMOTH) has been awarded the Military Medal. Mrs. BARNETT, who was born at Aberdeen in 1822, and was married to Mr. Richard H. CUMBERBEACH, of Manchester, in 1850, arrived at Port Chalmers in the Strathmore in 1856. Mr. CUMBERBEACH died on the voyage to New Zealand, and was buried at sea, leaving his wife with four young children. In 1857 she married Mr. Henry BARNETT, and lived for a short time at Moeraki, being taken there in a bullock dray. In 1860, the family moved by means of a surf boat to Waikouaiti, where Mr. BARNETT had taken up land. Here Mrs. BARNETT resided for over 50 years, and having a good knowledge of nursing was able to afford great assistance to her neighbours until there was a resident physician in the district. Mrs. [Mr.?] BARNETT died and was buried at Waikouaiti in 1880, and on Wednesday Mrs. BARNETT will be laid to rest there also at the side of her husband. The surviving members of her immediate family are Mrs. John SMITH (Wyndham), Mr. R. CUMBERBEACH (Mornington), and Mr. G. BARNETT (Styx)."
