  • Notes
    • 'Lag' is a Brennan nickname. Nicknames are used as a means of distinguishing one individual from others with similar names. Nicknames vary widely and may include: the name of an ancestor (typically father or mother), the individual's occupation or family trade, the name of the family dwelling, skills associated with the individual, religious affiliation, as well as physical or moral characteristics of his or her ancestors.

'Lag' maybe an alternative name for someone called Lawrence. In Ireland Lawrence became popular because of St. Lawrence O'Toole, bishop of Dublin and a man deeply involved in caring for his people at the time of the twelfth-century Norman invasion of Ireland. In his case, Lawrence was used as a substitute for the native Gaelic name Lorcan meaning 'little fierce one'). Also the name Logan (note it sounds similar to 'Lorcan') it derived from Scottish & Irish Gaelic place-names meaning "little hollow".

Logan: Logan from Gaelic place word lag meaning "hollow" + dim. suffix -an; "from the little hollow". Logan is used as the name of several places in Scotland and Ireland, and has been a surname since the 12th Century and a very popular name in recent years.

If Lag's generation and his sons were farmers and their children became miners then this suggests that the "Brennan Landers" nick-name would have originated after 1850. If so, then earlier ancestors for Martin Brennan would have had a different nickname. A 'lander' is a coal mining occupation.

The Brennan Landers are connected to the Brennan Lag line through two separate routes. Angela's research has shown that the names Jane Brennan and Paul Brennan are both rare forenames for the Castlecomer Brennans. Jane Brennan is the daughter of John 'lag' Brennan and she registers the birth of Peter Brennan the son of Martin Brennan and Mary nee Brophy. Also, Paul Brennan, a very rare name, is sponsor to the baptism of George Brennan, son of Marin Brennan and Mary nee Brophy.

In the 1823 Castlecomer Tithe records there are three Brennan Lags: John, Thomas & Michael but in the 1856 Griffiths Valuation only John lag and Thomas lag are mentioned. Michael is not head of a family, perhaps he has died by then.
