  • Notes
    • Joseph was born about September 1827 the son of William and Mary Ann FLACK and was baptised at East Hanningfield 4th November 1827.

As a 14yr old teenager Joseph followed the family occupation of the time and became an agricultural labourer. He had probably been a farmer for many years.

Joseph's elder brother, James, left the family and joined the Royal Marines on 14th December 1841. He became a private and remained in the navy until 10th February 1854 when he was discharged.

Joseph was obviously influenced strongly perhaps by his eldest brother and perhaps also by stories that James would tell when he returned home during leave.

When Joseph reached the age of 19 years he too left farming to join the HM Royal Marines.

The Marines have a distinguished naval history stretching back to 1664 when a regiment of soldiers was formed specially for service aboard navy ships. In 1755 the Marines became a permanent naval force when 5,000 men were raised under the control of the Admiralty. The Royal Navy only became a permanent force from 1853.

These 5,000 men were divided into fifty companies and distributed between the Marine's naval bases at Chatham, Plymouth and Portsmouth. These ports were the divisional headquarters of the Marines and sailors joined a division based on its catchment area. Recruits joined the division closest to where they were born. In 1802 King George III permitted the Marines to be renamed to the Royal Marines.

On 7th December 1846 Joseph, a humble labourer, enlisted in the Royal Marines. He was recruited by a Lieutenant Stauncey at Chelmsford. Joseph was 19 years old and 2 months and completed the Attestation Form the next day.

The Navy kept 'Description Books' for all of its sailors to be used in the case of desertion, a frequent problem for the navy. Joseph is described as:
      Height: 5ft 7¼in.
      Colour of hair: Brown
      Colour of eyes: Hazel
      Complexion: Sallow

On 1st June 1847 Joseph was transferred from the 40th Regiment after serving 175 days.
Private Joseph FLACK was awarded the Baltic Medal on 23rd April 1857 for his part in the Crimean War whilst serving as a Royal Marine aboard the HMS Boscawen (ADM 171/20 folio 27).

Joseph was discharged from the HMS Boscawen at the end of April 1857 and on 26th May he married Hannah Ann SACH at St. Mary's Woodham Ferrers, Essex. I'd like to believe that he was married in his whites proudly displaying his Baltic medal. With considerable pride his occupation was simply recorded as HM Royal Marines. 1857 was the year in which the naval ratings were given their first official uniform. William and Elizabeth Flack witness his marriage - this was probably his brother and his wife who were married on 28 June 1847.
The National Maritime Museum displays the sailor suit made for Edward VII as Prince of Wales in 1846, see left. It is based on the dress of the crew of the royal yacht, and is similar to that of other ratings.

Although there was no official uniform for naval ratings until 1857, naval captains tried to keep their ship's companies looking similar and smart. The frock has watch stripes on both arms. They should be on one or the other, however presumably the maker did not want to offend either the port or the starboard watch.

In May 1857 HMS Boscawen set sail under Captain Ashmore Powell and Commander Maximillian Elliott. At Table Bay, Cape Town South Africa, there was an attempted mutiny against Commander Elliott, and Sailor Delaney is flogged receiving 52 lashes. On reaching Simons Bay in September 1858 there is a further attempted mutiny against Commander Elliott for his cruelty. Admiral Sir Frederick and Lady Grey join the Boscawen and he dismisses Commander Elliott. HMS Boscawen final voyage was to Portland Roads in February 1862 where she was reduced to a hulk in 1862 and converted into a training ship for boy seamen.

At some points in Joseph's naval career he was in Gaol for 37 days and 4 days respectively.

On 3rd April 1860 Joseph transferred to the Plymouth Division of the HM Royal Marines.

[from Revelation 14:13 "Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them."]

Grave is located in St. Mary's Parish Church, Woodham Ferrers, Essex, England. Through the entrance gate and passing the war memorial to your left, the gravestone is around the corner to your immediate right. The gravestone and inscription is facing the church but is difficult to read due to errosion. It reads as above.
