  • Notes
    • Private James FLACK joined the HM Royal Marines on 14th Dec 1841 and completed the Attestation Form on 16 Dec 1841. He was aged 23 1/2 years old and 5ft 6in tall and from the Parish of East Hanningfield, Town of Chelmsford and County of Essex.

His hair was dark brown in colour, had grey eyes and a sallow complexion.

He was enlisted by Captain Clendon at Chelmsford and was previously a Labourer.

He was discharged 10 Feb 1854.

(Source: HM Royal Marines Chatham Division Description Books at the National Archives: ADM 158/20 1797-1859).

Royal Marines were always based at one of three of their main bases, known as Divisions. These were Chatham, Plymouth and Portsmouth.

Coming from Essex James was assigned to Chatham Division and would have travelled to and from there regularly when on shore leave. On one of these occasions he met his wife Barbara who lived in nearby Maidstone. He eventually settled in Kent where he is found with his wife in 1881.
