      Vicar General's Office } 30th October 1805. Which day appeared perfonally Abraham Parry Cumberbatch Esqre and made oath, that he is of the Parish of Sainte Mary le Bone in the County of Middlesex, a Bachelor aged twenty one years and upwards and intendeth to intermarry with Charlotte Jones of the Parish of Saint George Hanover Square in the same County, Spinster & minor aged seventeen years & upwards by and with the consent of Robert Burnet Jones Esqr the natural and lawful Father of the said minor and that he knoweth of no lawful Impediment, by Reafon of any Pre-Contract, Confanguity, Affinity, or any other lawful Caufe whatfoever, to hinder the faid intended Marriage, and prayed a Licence to folemnize the fame in the Parifh Church of Saint George Hanover Square aforesaid and further made Oath, that the ufual Place of Abode of her the said Charlotte Jones hath been in the faid Parifh of Saint George Hanover Square for upwards of four Weeks laft paft.       Arms.-Argent, an eagle displayed between three trefoils, impaling Quarterly 1 and 4, Argent, a lion rampant; 2 & 3, Argent, in chief three leaves, in base a bugle-horn.
      Motto.-Ne Tentes Aut Perfice.

      Abraham Parry Cumberbatch was of Barbadoes, later of Tubney Lodge, co. Berks, then The Broad, Hellingly, co. Sussex, and died at Tunbridge Wells October 1840, aged 56. Charlotte Jones was his first wife. They had issue and only surviving son, Abraham Carlton CUMBERBATCH, Consul at Constantinople, and a dau. Eliza.**

      The arms should be : Gules, an eagle displayed between three trefoils Or. See G.W. Marshall's "Collections for a Genealogical Account of the Family of Comberbatch." p.38.
      A pedigree of JONES of Barbadoes is in Burke's "Landed Gentry."

      Henry Chicheley Michell the minister who married Abraham Carlton Cumberbatch and Charlotte Jones was his brother-in-law; his sister Eliza's husband.

    • One of her sisters (the third daughter of Charlotte's parents) became the second wife of James Everard, 9th Baron Arundell of Wardour, who died 1817) - they married 18 September 1806 (L. Laurence Boyle Cumberbatch Genealogy).

      Monumental Inscription in St. Mary, Paddington (In the Church, on north wall of north gallery, on a sculptured white marble tablet; above is a broken pediment, with a kneeling figure, angel's head, and child below:-

      Sacred to the Memory of CHARLOTTE CUMBERBATCH, daughter of the late Robert Burnet Jones, Esqre and of Elizabeth Susanna his wife. Born October 5th 1786; Married A.P. Cumberbatch ESQre October 31st 1805. Died January 15th 1818. Her afflicted Husband has caused this monument to be erected. She lies entombed with her father Rt Burnet Jones ESQre and her youngest brother Joseph Jones, ESQre in the North Ground of this church. Benjamin William Robert Cumberbatch, her second son died at Bifrons, near Canterbury, May 7th 1820, in the 8th year of his age.
