  • Notes
    • 4 June 1884 - 3 July 1884 Ellen Philips and her child from Crutt, Castlecomer were imprisoned in Tullamore Prison, Offaly. She was aged 26, height: 5ft 4in, brown hair, hazel eyes and fresh complexion. She was a housekeeper. She was imprisoned for 1 month for intimidation.

1901: In 1901 she can read and write (1901 Census 25/32 Form B. No 12 Toortane Rothaspick Parish , Castlecomer, Kilkenny).

Following the death of her husband James in 1905 there was a problem with the family home. Ellen was a very determined person and refused to leave her home, it seems she may even have spent some time in prison over the matter (Jane O'Neill nee Doyle quoted in a Family History Letter from John & Diane Brennan 19 February 2002).

      From her son's notebook:
James Phillips died 5th Sept 1905 RIP
Ellen Phillips died 3rd Dec 1929 RIP
      Evictions 11th May 1906
      Return 9th June 1909
      Trouble again May 1921
      Final Settlement 20th May 1924

Started new house 4th June 1937
      Finished walls 7th Aug 1937
      Shell completed Oct 20th
Went to live in new house 22nd July 1938

SURNAME_MEANING: Maher is derived from the irish Meagher meaning 'descendant of Hospitable' (Cottle B. Dictionary of Surnames). In 1890 Maher was the 87th commonest surname.

NAME: On her marriage certificate she signed against her name as Eleanor, the register recorded her name as Ellen Maher (1872 Castlecomer Volume 13 Page 355).

Maher - The O Meachair (Maher) sept of Tipperary also spread into Kilkenny. Maher, also written Meagher, is in Irish O Meachair, derived from the word meachar, meaning hospitable - Maher is a word of two syllables, not pronounced Marr. Of the same stock as the O'Carrolls of Ely it belongs to the barony of Ikerrin in Co. Tipperary - in fact fifty per cent of the eight thousand people of the name come from Co. Tipperary. Maher territory was near Roscrea, at the foot of the famous Devil's Bit Mountain and , unlike some Gaelic septs, they were not ousted by Norman invaders but remained in possession side by side with the Ormond Butlers. Though this is a genuine Gaelic O name it is rarely, if ever, met with in its English form with the prefix. One of the adventurous and ill-starred rapparees of the seventeenth century was Capt. John Meagher, who was captured and hanged in 1690. Father Maher (1793-1874) was a distinguished ecclesiastic; and Thomas Francis Meagher (1823-1867), known as "Meagher of the Sword", was one of the most prominent of the Young Irelanders. He was later leader of the Irish Brigade in the Federal Army in the American Civil War. The 1890 census for Kilkenny noted 21 births in that year for the surname Maher. Maher is has its largest showing in Tipperary and Kilkenny (and surrounding areas) in the mid-19th century record.

      DEATH: She died a widow.

CAUSE OF DEATH: Senile decay, Cardiac failure which lasted 5 weeks.

Memorial Inscription: Clogh Church Pew: left row - 14 benches from rear: Pray for James and Ellen Phillips, Tourtane.

    • On further prompting of family recollections it seems that Ellen fell on hard times when her husband James (my Granffather) died in 1905 and when her prize posession a horse died she sold a cow to replace it [which would have been unheard of then] this meant she was unable to raise the money for the rent and the eviction of 1906 took place. The landlord wanted to sell the land and didn't want a woman tenant or owner, our father Louis was only about 11 or 12 at the time and James Bryan stepped in he was what was known as an "enforcer" at the time & he let it be known that anyone who tried to purchase the land would have him and his Fenian comrades to answer to. They returned to the land in 1909 and had trouble again in 1921 by this time our father was able to make a settlement with the powers that be. The afore mentioned James of Jim Bryan as he was known lived in America and made many trips home over the years and indeed sometimes clandestinely!! of which we will no further comment!!!
The above story is fairly consistent within my own family recollections and hopefully for the future we will have put down the base for the generations to come with their Family Tree...
