  • Notes
    • When he was baptised 25th January 1807, with his mother Elizabeth a mulatto slave, he was described as a Mulatto Boy Slave son of Elizabeth both belonging to Lawrence Trent Cumberbatch Esqr. Also, neither he nor his mother is baptised with any surname.

Laurence Trent Cumberbatch owned an Elizabeth, a mulatto slave, with a son called John Edward. John Edward was baptised 25 January 1807 St. Peter (1157942 Page 104). On 23rd March 1824 an Elizabeth Cumberbatch (F.M. - Free Mulatto) is buried in St. Peters (1157942 Page 173). By 1829, John Edw. Cumberbatch owns slaves of his own: Phillida daughter & John Robert son of Thomasin (1157942 Page 230). Was 'John Robert' named by and after his owner?
On 28th March 1830 James William and Laurence both sons of Harriett 'Skinner', a slave of Jn. Edw. Cumberbatch are baptised (1157942 Page 234). Was Laurence named by and after John Edward Cumberbatch's previous owner Laurence Trent Cumberbatch? Was Laurence Trent Cumberbatch John Edward's natural father? On 26 September 1831 a Samuel son of Thomasin a slave of Jn Edw Cumberbatch is baptised (1157942 Page 239). On 23rd May 1832 in the slave register a Harriet 32 Black Barbadian, James William 5 7/12 Black Barbadian and Lawrence 2 1/2 Black Barbadian, are entered as 3 additions to the previous registration "bought of the estate Richard Skinner" but Lawrence was born under John Edwd's ownership (T71/551 Volume 5 Folio 216 Page 102 Slave Registers 1832 Public Record Office).
By 27 March 1834 in the Special Registration John Edward has 7 slaves: (1) Thomasin Female 31 Black Barbadian, (2) Mimbo Female 37 Black Barbadian, (3) Joanna or Julia 20 Female Coloured Barbadian, (4) John Robert 11 3/12 Male Black Barbadian, (5) Phillidy 9 1/12 Female Black Barbadian, (6) James William 7 6/12 Male Black Barbadian and (7) John Robert 11 3/12 Male Black Barbadian. An eighth William Edwards 4/12 Black Barbadian was added by birth (T71/563 Volume 11 Folio 73 Page 37 Slave Registers 1834 Public Record Office). No deaths are recorded although Harriet most probably died between registers. John Edward Cumberbatch was awarded £116 10s 4d for his 8 slaves on 28th May 1836.
John Edward Cumberbatch was buried in St. Peters 16th August 1838 aged 38 years old (1157943 Burials Page [34] 69).
Lawrence Trent Cumberbatch died Saint Nicholas Plantation, aged 71 years old and was buried 19 December 1833 in St. Peter's.
