      To whom it may concern,
Mr I.W. Cumberbatch has held the post of Under Manager or Senior Assistant of these Mines for a period of three years and two months to date. During this time he has performed his duties to the entire satisfaction of every one concerned, & I regard his departure for Europe as a loss to this Company which will be extremely difficult to replace, in case he decides not to return here.
He is a practical man of the best type, & also has a thorough knowledge of the theory of mining, while he raises tasks, peculiar to a colliery abroad, which he has successfully undertaken here point to a good all round previous experience. He is energetic, & has a good control of labour, the 1000 coolies employed at these Collieries being directly under his supervision. I cannot speak too highly of Mr Cumberbatch's abilities, & I can confidently recommend him to get results, whatever official position on a colliery he may undertake.

      January 22nd 1915
THIS IS TO CERTIFY that Mr Isaac William Cumberbatch of Deggs Fields, Longton, Staffs, entered the service of this Company in August 1911, being employed at our Silimpopon Mines in British North Borneo as an Assistant to the Colliery Manager.
As a result of his energy and capability he was promoted to the position of Under-manager in February 1913, and for about two months, pending the arrival of a new Colliery Manager, he had sole charge at the Colliery. During that period, and since, he has further proved his ability by the reorganization of several of the departments at the Collery.
Our Consulting Engineers - Messrs T & W Morgans of New Broad Street House, London, E.C. - have been requested to prepare a Testimonial setting out details of the work undertaken by him at our Silimpopon Mines.
Although Mr Cumberbatch has recently completed his engagement in our service it is hoped that presently we may be able to offer him another appointment, for we have every confidence that his late work at Silimpopon Mines would justify us in so doing.
      By order of the Board.

      I.W. Cumberbatch Esq,
      32, Kinsey Street,
      Silverdale, Staffs.
      Dear Sir,
In response to your application to the Board I now set out a record of your services at the Colliery in British North Borneo.
You were engaged for a period of 3 years as Colliery Manager at Silimpopon Mines in British North Borneo. Prior to sailing for Borneo you received the guiding principles for the new system of development of the Collieries. You selected the locality, and laid-out the new workings, and installed all the essential plant, including a Walkers Compressor and a battery of four boilers.

Figure 4 Walker Compression Engine fitted at Silimpopon
You were desired to progress rapidly with the lay-out as the existing workings might be fully developed within a period of 18 months or 2 years after your arrival, and a largely increased output was required. You were desired to thoroughly re-organise the distribution of labour and wages in the underground and the surface departments, including also the river transport service of steam launches and lighters and the coaling facilities at the shipment port which is about 15 miles distant from the main collieries.
Staff re-arrangements, you gave complete satisfaction to the Board.
The output of coal was increased by about 50%, and the reduced cost of production you obtained was about 20%, whilst further benefits from your economical arrangements have since accrued to the Company.
You arrived at the Mines on the 24th March 1916, and, solely due to ill health, returned home on the 13th June 1917, and are at present under leave of absence. Your return was in a measure probably due to the persistence with which you so ably dealt with the many duties imposed upon you as Colliery Manager.
The Board regard you as a man of excellent personal character, and of good practical and theoretical mining experience, possessing strong administrative powers, and a good manager of workmen. You had under your control some 700 Chinese and Malay coolies, also a small European Staff.
The Board has no hesitation in confidently recommending you for a suitable responsible position, and they will much regret of, by reason of your present disability, you are precluded from service at the Silimpopon Mines at a future date.
      Your faithfully,
FOR THE COWIE HARBOUR COAL CO LD.

      To Mr I.W. Cumberbatch
      Dear Sir,
I beg to confirm the terms of your engagement with this Company viz:
You commenced duty on the 1st inst as Manager of our Hanley Deep Pit at a commencing salary of £850/-/- (eight hundred and fifty pounds) per annum with house & coal allowance.
As the programme of developments in hand at the Colliery is achieved thereby increasing the importance & value of the Deep Pit as a unit of the Company’s properties, your salary will be raised to £1000/-/- (one thousand pounds) per annum.
I may say we look for an output stabilised at 12,000 tons per week by or before the end of September 1926, as the first stage of the developments previously referred to.
It goes without saying that you are expected to make regular, daily underground inspections of the Colliery under your charge for the purpose of efficiently organising & supervising the work of the Colliery, keeping in close daily touch with your subordinate officials.
The engagement can be terminated by one calendar month’s notice from either side.
